Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Benzoin siam, a resin obtained from Styrax tonkinensis, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia. Traditionally, it has been used in the preparation of "compound tincture of benzoin," which is inhaled as a steam or applied topically to help relieve symptoms of respiratory tract infections and soothe irritated mucous membranes. Historical texts and pharmacopeias cite its use for coughs, sore throats, and as an expectorant, largely due to its aromatic and mildly antiseptic properties. However, these uses are based mainly on empirical tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. There is a paucity of modern clinical studies specifically investigating the antiviral properties of Benzoin siam or its efficacy in treating viral infections. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on the general antimicrobial properties of resins. Therefore, while its use is supported by tradition, there is very limited scientific validation for its role in treating or supporting viral infections.
