Rating (out of 5): 2

Casticin is a flavonoid compound primarily found in the plant Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree) and some other medicinal species. In recent years, several laboratory (in vitro) and animal (in vivo) studies have explored casticin’s antiviral activities. Notably, research has demonstrated that casticin exhibits inhibitory effects against a range of viruses, including influenza A virus, dengue virus, and enterovirus 71. These studies suggest that casticin may interfere with viral entry, replication, or assembly processes, often through modulation of cellular pathways or direct inhibition of viral proteins. For example, a 2016 study published in Antiviral Research found that casticin inhibited influenza A virus replication in vitro, and a 2018 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology reported similar effects on dengue virus. However, it is important to note that almost all evidence for casticin’s antiviral activity comes from preclinical studies. There are no published clinical trials in humans confirming its safety or efficacy as a treatment for viral infections. Thus, while there is preliminary scientific support for its antiviral potential, the evidence is limited and does not currently justify its use as a standalone therapy for viral infections in humans. Its use for this purpose is not rooted in traditional medicine, but rather in modern pharmacological investigations.
