Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ceylon Spinach (Basella alba) has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, for its purported health benefits, including the support or treatment of infections. Traditional healers have utilized the leaves, stems, and roots of Ceylon Spinach to prepare decoctions or poultices for a range of ailments, some of which include fever and infections, which could be viral in nature. However, the evidence supporting its specific use against viral infections is largely anecdotal, and there are very few documented traditional uses that precisely distinguish between viral and bacterial infections. Modern scientific studies on Basella alba have focused mainly on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and general antimicrobial activities. While some laboratory research has shown that extracts of Ceylon Spinach may exhibit antimicrobial activity, robust evidence specifically demonstrating antiviral effects in humans is lacking. No major clinical trials or extensive pharmacological studies have validated its use for viral infections. Therefore, its use for supporting or treating viral infections is primarily justified by traditional practices, with minimal scientific validation at this time.
