Evidence supporting the use of: L12-myoviridae
For the health condition: Infection (viral)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
L12-myoviridae refers to a bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria) belonging to the Myoviridae family. This group of viruses is not used to directly treat viral infections in humans, but rather, it is employed in the context of phage therapy to treat bacterial infections, especially those that are resistant to antibiotics. The use of L12-myoviridae and similar bacteriophages is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence, particularly in the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Phage therapy has been explored since the early 20th century, but its adoption was limited in the West after the advent of antibiotics. However, with rising antibiotic resistance, there has been renewed interest, and recent case reports and clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of bacteriophage therapy in treating otherwise untreatable bacterial infections.
It is important to clarify that L12-myoviridae is not used to support or treat viral infections in the conventional sense (i.e., infections caused by human pathogenic viruses such as influenza, HIV, or SARS-CoV-2). Its “antiviral” action is specific to viruses that target bacteria. Thus, it is not appropriate for the direct treatment of human viral infections. The scientific rating of 4 reflects the strong but still emerging evidence for its use in bacterial—not viral—infectious disease management, primarily as a targeted antimicrobial agent. Continued research is expanding the understanding and clinical application of bacteriophages, with multiple ongoing clinical trials worldwide.
