Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lentinan is a beta-glucan polysaccharide isolated from the shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes). Its use in supporting or treating viral infections is primarily based on scientific research, although the quality and quantity of evidence is moderate and not definitive. Lentinan has been shown in preclinical studies to modulate the immune system by enhancing the activity of macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and T lymphocytes, which play important roles in the body's defense against viral infections. Additionally, some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that lentinan can inhibit viral replication and improve immune response to certain viruses, such as influenza and herpes simplex virus. However, most clinical studies have focused on its use as an adjuvant in cancer therapy rather than direct treatment of viral infections in humans. There is a lack of large, well-controlled human trials specifically investigating lentinan for viral infections. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and preclinical support for its immunomodulatory effects against viruses, the direct clinical evidence in humans remains limited, and the overall evidence rating is modest.
