Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ovotransferrin, a glycoprotein found in egg white, possesses iron-binding properties similar to those of transferrin and lactoferrin. Its potential to support or treat viral infections is based on scientific studies, primarily in vitro and animal research, rather than historical or traditional use. Ovotransferrin can sequester iron, thereby limiting its availability to pathogens, which is a mechanism relevant to both bacterial and viral infection control. Some studies have demonstrated that ovotransferrin exhibits antiviral activity against certain viruses, such as herpes simplex virus and influenza, likely by interfering with viral replication and modulating immune responses.

However, most supporting data come from laboratory and animal investigations rather than clinical trials in humans. The evidence for antiviral effects is promising but remains preliminary. No large-scale, high-quality human studies have established a clear benefit of ovotransferrin supplementation for the treatment or prevention of viral infections. Thus, the ingredient’s use for this purpose is scientifically inspired and justified by mechanistic and early preclinical data, but clinical validation is lacking, resulting in a moderate-low evidence score.
