Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Phragmites, commonly known as common reed, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asian countries such as China. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the rhizome of Phragmites australis (known as "Lu Gen") has been used for centuries to treat various ailments, including fever, cough, and symptoms associated with infections like influenza and certain viral conditions. The traditional use is based on its perceived ability to clear heat, promote urination, and relieve thirst, which are interpreted within the TCM framework as helping to manage infections and associated symptoms.

However, scientific evidence for the antiviral efficacy of Phragmites is limited. While some preliminary laboratory studies have investigated extracts of Phragmites for antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity, robust clinical studies supporting its use specifically against viral infections are lacking. The evidence base does not meet the standards required for modern pharmacological validation. Therefore, its use for viral infections is primarily justified by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
