Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phyllanthus fraternus has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine, to support the treatment of viral infections, most notably hepatitis B. The plant is closely related to Phyllanthus niruri, which has been more extensively studied for antiviral properties. The traditional use of P. fraternus for viral conditions is primarily based on empirical evidence and ethnobotanical reports, where extracts of the whole plant or leaves have been used for liver disorders and jaundice, conditions often associated with viral hepatitis. While there is some overlap in the chemical constituents between P. fraternus and its relatives (such as lignans and flavonoids), scientific studies directly investigating the antiviral effectiveness of P. fraternus itself are limited and not as robust as for P. niruri. Some in vitro studies suggest potential antiviral activity, but large-scale clinical trials or comprehensive pharmacological studies are lacking. Consequently, its use for viral infections is justified by traditional practice and some preliminary scientific support, but high-quality scientific validation is currently limited.
