Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Piper retrofractum, commonly known as Javanese long pepper, has been traditionally used in various Southeast Asian medicinal systems for treating a range of ailments, including infections. Its use in supporting or treating viral infections, however, is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Ethnobotanical records indicate that the fruits and roots of Piper retrofractum have been used in folk medicine for their general antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties. Some traditional remedies have employed it for symptoms resembling those of viral infections, such as fevers and respiratory ailments.

Despite its traditional use, scientific studies specifically evaluating the antiviral effects of Piper retrofractum are limited. Most research has focused on its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, with only a few in vitro studies suggesting possible antiviral activity of related Piper species. There is currently insufficient direct clinical or pre-clinical evidence to validate its efficacy against viral infections in humans. Thus, while Piper retrofractum continues to be used in traditional medicine for infection-related conditions, its use for viral infections is not strongly supported by modern scientific research.
