Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhabdosia rubescens (also known as Isodon rubescens or "Dong Ling Cao") has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for various ailments, including infections and inflammatory disorders. Its use for treating or supporting viral infections is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Historically, it has been employed to "clear heat and detoxify," which in traditional Chinese medical theory sometimes relates to combating infectious processes. There are a limited number of in vitro studies suggesting that extracts of Rhabdosia rubescens may possess antiviral properties, particularly against some strains of influenza and herpes simplex viruses. However, these findings are preliminary, and there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials in humans to confirm efficacy or safety for viral infections. Most modern research has focused on its potential anti-cancer effects rather than antiviral activity. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and there is some low-level laboratory evidence, scientific validation is insufficient to recommend it as a treatment for viral infections.
