Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine (where Sanguisorba officinalis is known as "Di Yu"). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Sanguisorba is primarily recognized for its abilities to stop bleeding and treat burns, wounds, and diarrhea. There are also references to its use in the management of infections, including some febrile (fever-related) illnesses that may have viral origins. However, these uses are based on traditional practice and theory rather than modern biomedical understanding of viral pathogens.

Scientific studies on Sanguisorba’s direct antiviral effects are limited. Some in vitro (test tube) studies suggest that extracts of Sanguisorba possess general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but robust evidence specifically supporting its use for treating viral infections in humans is lacking. No high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy against viral infections. As a result, while Sanguisorba is traditionally used in some cultures for infection-related symptoms, the existing evidence base is weak, and its traditional use is not well supported by modern scientific validation.

In summary, the use of Sanguisorba for viral infections is rooted in traditional medicine with minimal scientific backing, and its effectiveness for this indication remains unproven in contemporary research.
