Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terpinen-4-ol is a major bioactive component of tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) and has been studied for its antimicrobial properties. While it is well-established for its antibacterial and antifungal effects, evidence for its effectiveness against viral infections is more limited. In vitro (test tube) studies have demonstrated that terpinen-4-ol and tea tree oil can inactivate certain viruses, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2), by disrupting viral envelopes or interfering with the ability of viruses to infect host cells. For example, Carson et al. (2001) reported that tea tree oil and its components, including terpinen-4-ol, exhibited some activity against HSV in vitro. However, these effects have not translated into robust clinical evidence, and there are no high-quality human trials demonstrating clear antiviral efficacy of terpinen-4-ol for viral infections. Most uses for viral infections are based on laboratory findings rather than clinical practice or traditional use. Overall, the evidence supporting the use of terpinen-4-ol for treating viral infections is preliminary and not strong enough to recommend it as a standard therapy.
