Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Trametes, particularly Trametes versicolor (also known as turkey tail mushroom), has been studied for its potential antiviral properties. Extracts from this fungus contain polysaccharopeptides such as PSP (polysaccharopeptide) and PSK (polysaccharide-K), which have demonstrated immune-modulating and antiviral effects in laboratory and animal studies. For example, in vitro studies have indicated that PSP can inhibit the replication of certain viruses, such as herpes simplex virus and influenza virus, by enhancing immune system responses. Additionally, some small-scale human studies suggest that Trametes extracts may improve immune parameters in patients with viral infections, including hepatitis B.

However, the clinical evidence is limited. Most studies are preclinical or involve small sample sizes, and there is insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical trial data to robustly support its efficacy in treating viral infections in humans. The majority of published work focuses on immune support rather than direct antiviral activity, and much of the clinical data comes from studies on cancer patients where viral infection was not the primary endpoint. While Trametes has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, its use specifically for viral infections is based more on its general immune-supportive reputation than on strong direct evidence. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for its investigation, the strength of evidence remains modest.
