Verbascoside, also known as acteoside, is a phenylethanoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants such as Verbascum and Plantago species. There is some scientific interest in verbascoside for its potential antiviral properties, primarily based on preclinical studies. Laboratory experiments (in vitro) have shown that verbascoside exhibits inhibitory effects against certain viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV) and enterovirus 71. The proposed mechanisms of action include interference with viral replication and modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation.

However, the evidence supporting verbascoside’s use for viral infections remains limited to cell culture and a few animal studies. There are no published human clinical trials evaluating its efficacy or safety as an antiviral agent. Most of the current data derive from isolated compound testing or extracts rich in verbascoside, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to this compound.

In summary, there is some preliminary scientific evidence indicating that verbascoside possesses antiviral activity in laboratory settings, but clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Thus, while verbascoside is being investigated for its antiviral potential, its use to treat or support viral infection in humans is not well validated and should be considered experimental at this stage.
