Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aletris, particularly Aletris farinosa (commonly known as "unicorn root"), has been used in traditional herbal medicine—especially within North American indigenous and 19th-century eclectic medical practices—to address various gynecological complaints, including infertility. Historical records and herbal texts describe its use as a “uterine tonic” believed to support reproductive health, regulate menstrual cycles, and alleviate symptoms such as menstrual cramps and weakness or “prolapse” of the uterus. The rationale for Aletris’s use in infertility was largely based on symptomatic relief and the empirical observations of herbalists, rather than controlled studies or known mechanisms of action.

Despite this traditional usage, there is a lack of modern clinical studies or robust scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of Aletris for treating or supporting infertility. The scientific literature contains sparse data on its pharmacology, efficacy, or safety in this context. Most references to Aletris for infertility are found in historical or ethnobotanical sources, not peer-reviewed medical research. As such, while Aletris has a place in herbal tradition for female reproductive issues, its use for infertility remains unsubstantiated by modern science.
