Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Antler horn, often referred to as "deer antler velvet," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is believed to support vitality, sexual function, and fertility. The rationale in TCM is that antler velvet "tonifies the kidney yang," a concept associated with reproductive health in traditional frameworks. Historical texts cite its use for improving libido and treating impotence or infertility in both men and women. However, scientific research validating these claims is extremely limited. A few animal studies suggest possible androgenic or growth-promoting effects, but there is no robust clinical evidence in humans demonstrating that antler horn or antler velvet improves fertility outcomes. Systematic reviews and clinical guidelines do not support its use for infertility. Thus, its use is justified primarily by tradition rather than scientific evidence, and the strength of supporting evidence is rated as very low (1/5), based mostly on anecdotal and historical usage rather than modern research.
