Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ba Ji Tian (Morinda officinalis) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support reproductive health, including the treatment of infertility. The use of Ba Ji Tian for this purpose is rooted in centuries-old TCM theory, which classifies the herb as warming and strengthening to the “Kidney Yang”—a concept associated in TCM with sexual function and fertility. TCM practitioners often prescribe Ba Ji Tian (sometimes in combination with other herbs) for infertility attributed to “Kidney Yang deficiency.”

Scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in treating infertility is limited. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of Morinda officinalis can increase testosterone levels, improve sperm count and motility, and exert antioxidant effects, which could play a role in male reproductive health. However, these studies are preliminary, mostly conducted on rodents, and often use high doses or isolated extracts rather than the whole herb as traditionally prepared. There is a lack of robust human clinical trials validating these effects or directly linking Ba Ji Tian intake to improved fertility outcomes in men or women. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are also lacking.

In summary, Ba Ji Tian’s use for infertility is justified mainly by traditional practice, with emerging but inconclusive preclinical evidence. Until more rigorous clinical research is conducted, its use for infertility remains predominantly traditional.
