Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo), also known as Huang Jing Zi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. In TCM, it is believed to regulate Qi and Blood, dispel wind and heat, and sometimes is included in formulations for gynecological conditions. Its use for infertility is primarily traditional, based on the doctrine of balancing bodily systems and supporting reproductive health. The evidence from modern scientific research specific to Chinese Chastetree and infertility is limited and largely preclinical, with some animal studies suggesting hormonal effects, but there are no robust human clinical trials confirming its efficacy for this indication. Most scientific studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties, rather than direct effects on fertility. It should be noted that the better-known European Chastetree (Vitex agnus-castus) has more substantial evidence and is more widely studied for female reproductive health and infertility, but this should not be conflated with Chinese Chastetree. In summary, the use of Chinese Chastetree for infertility is justified by historical and traditional practice rather than strong scientific evidence.
