Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is an amino acid found in nervous and endocrine tissues and has been investigated for its possible role in male infertility, primarily due to its involvement in the regulation of testosterone synthesis. Several small human studies and animal models have indicated that DAA supplementation may temporarily increase testosterone levels and improve certain sperm parameters in subfertile men. For example, a 2009 study (Topo et al., Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology) found that DAA supplementation increased LH and testosterone levels in humans and rats, and also observed improved sperm motility and concentration in a subset of subfertile men. However, the evidence remains preliminary and somewhat inconsistent. Later studies have questioned the reproducibility of these effects, especially in healthy men, and the long-term safety and efficacy are unresolved. Most available research is of limited duration (few weeks to months), with small sample sizes and a lack of robust, placebo-controlled trials. In addition, the positive effects appear primarily in men with existing subfertility or low baseline testosterone, not in healthy men. In summary, there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence for using D-Aspartic Acid to support male fertility, but the overall quality and quantity of evidence are low. It is not a traditional remedy for infertility, and its use should be considered experimental pending further research.
