Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Epimedium, also known as "Horny Goat Weed," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating sexual dysfunction and supporting fertility. Traditionally, Epimedium is believed to tonify the kidney yang, a concept in TCM associated with reproductive health and sexual vitality. Its main active compound, icariin, has been the subject of some preliminary scientific studies, primarily in animal models. These studies suggest possible effects on improving erectile function and influencing hormone levels, such as increasing testosterone, which could theoretically impact fertility. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically addressing infertility are lacking. The existing evidence is mostly anecdotal or based on traditional use, with limited and low-quality scientific validation. Thus, while Epimedium is traditionally used to support fertility and sexual health, more rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for these purposes in humans.
