Estrogen is scientifically validated as a treatment for certain forms of infertility, particularly those related to anovulation or inadequate endometrial development. In the female reproductive system, estrogen plays a critical role in regulating the menstrual cycle, promoting follicular growth, and preparing the endometrium (lining of the uterus) for implantation of an embryo. In fertility treatments, exogenous estrogens are often used as part of assisted reproductive technology (ART) protocols. For example, in in vitro fertilization (IVF), estrogen may be administered after egg retrieval to help support and thicken the endometrial lining before embryo transfer, thereby improving the chances of implantation and pregnancy. Additionally, in women with ovulatory dysfunction, such as those with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism or after ovulation induction agents like clomiphene citrate, estrogen supplementation can help counterbalance anti-estrogenic effects on the endometrium. Clinical studies and guidelines support these uses. For instance, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine recognizes the role of estrogen in endometrial preparation for embryo transfer cycles. However, estrogen is not indicated for all causes of infertility and should be tailored to the underlying diagnosis. The evidence base is robust for these targeted applications, though not universal for all infertility cases. Overall, estrogen’s role in infertility treatment is well-established in specific clinical scenarios.
