Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Eurycoma longifolia, commonly known as Tongkat Ali, has a long history of traditional use as an aphrodisiac and fertility enhancer in Southeast Asian herbal medicine. In recent years, its use for supporting male infertility has been investigated in several scientific studies. Evidence suggests that Eurycoma longifolia may positively affect male fertility parameters, particularly sperm quality and testosterone levels. Several small randomized controlled trials and observational studies have reported improvements in sperm concentration, motility, and morphology in subfertile men taking standardized Eurycoma longifolia extracts for periods ranging from 3 to 9 months. Additionally, increases in serum testosterone levels have been observed, which may contribute to improved spermatogenesis and overall reproductive function. However, the total body of evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and heterogeneity in study design and product standardization. There is a lack of large-scale, long-term clinical trials directly linking Eurycoma longifolia use to increased pregnancy rates, so its role should be considered supportive rather than definitive. The safety profile appears favorable in short-term studies, but data on long-term use are lacking. In summary, while traditional use is substantial and there is a moderate level of scientific validation for improving some markers of male fertility, more robust research is needed to firmly establish its efficacy.
