Fadogia agrestis is primarily used in traditional African medicine as an aphrodisiac and to support male fertility. The plant has been historically utilized in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa for enhancing libido and treating male reproductive issues, including erectile dysfunction and infertility. The traditional use is based on ethnobotanical knowledge rather than robust clinical evidence.
Scientific studies on Fadogia agrestis are limited and have mostly been conducted in animal models. Some rodent studies suggest that extracts of Fadogia agrestis may increase serum testosterone levels, libido, and markers of spermatogenesis. For example, research published in Asian Journal of Andrology (Yakubu et al., 2005) found increased testosterone and improved sexual behavior in male rats. Other studies reported dose-dependent increases in testicular weight and sperm count in rodents.
However, there are no published human clinical trials evaluating its effectiveness or safety for treating infertility. The evidence from animal models cannot be directly extrapolated to humans, and concerns about potential toxicity exist, particularly with long-term use. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is weak and remains preliminary.
