Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Flower pollen, also known as bee pollen or pollen extract, has a history of traditional use in various herbal and alternative medicine systems, particularly in Europe and Asia, for supporting reproductive health and fertility. The rationale behind its use derives from the belief that pollen contains a wide array of nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals that might enhance vitality and overall reproductive function. In traditional medicine, pollen has sometimes been recommended for both male and female infertility, with anecdotal claims of increased sperm count, improved ovarian function, and enhanced libido.

However, scientific evidence supporting the use of flower pollen for treating infertility is limited and of low quality. A few small studies have investigated pollen extracts (such as Cernilton) for male reproductive health, mostly in the context of prostate health rather than direct fertility outcomes. There is a lack of robust clinical trials demonstrating a clear benefit for infertility, either in men or women. Most claims are based on extrapolation from animal studies or on the nutritional content of pollen, rather than on controlled human research. Thus, while flower pollen's use in infertility is rooted in tradition, current scientific validation is weak, and more rigorous studies are needed to substantiate any therapeutic claim.
