Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Labisia pumila, also known as Kacip Fatimah, has a long history of traditional use in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries, particularly among women. Traditionally, it is utilized for various female reproductive health concerns, including the support of fertility, postpartum recovery, menstrual regulation, and the alleviation of gynecological problems. The application of Labisia pumila for infertility is primarily based on ethnobotanical and folk medicine practices, with anecdotal accounts attributing its efficacy to perceived hormonal balancing and uterine tonic effects.

Scientific research on Labisia pumila’s direct effect on infertility is very limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest mild estrogenic activity, antioxidant effects, and influence on reproductive hormones, which could theoretically support reproductive health. However, high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating its efficacy for treating or supporting infertility in humans are lacking. Most published studies focus on general reproductive health, menopausal symptoms, or menstrual function rather than fertility outcomes per se. Thus, while its use for infertility is well established in traditional medicine, there is insufficient scientific evidence to robustly validate these claims. More rigorous human studies are needed to determine whether Labisia pumila has any clinically meaningful effect on infertility.
