Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tribulus Terrestris has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, to support male and female fertility and enhance libido. Historical texts and traditional practitioners have recommended it for treating sexual dysfunction, boosting vitality, and improving reproductive health. The plant is believed to stimulate the production of certain hormones, notably testosterone, which could theoretically influence fertility parameters.

Scientific evidence supporting these traditional claims remains limited and inconsistent. Some animal studies have suggested that Tribulus Terrestris may improve sperm quality, motility, and hormone levels. However, human clinical trials are few, often small in scale, and provide conflicting results. A handful of studies in men with infertility have reported modest improvements in sperm parameters or testosterone, but others have found no significant benefit. Research in women is even more sparse and inconclusive.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that there is insufficient high-quality evidence to support the widespread use of Tribulus Terrestris for treating infertility in either men or women. As such, while its use is justified by tradition, robust scientific validation is lacking, and more rigorous research is needed to determine its true efficacy and safety profile for infertility treatment.
