Galangal, which refers to several species in the Zingiberaceae family (notably Alpinia galanga and Kaempferia galanga), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Southeast Asian folk medicine. It has been employed for its purported anti-inflammatory, digestive, and stimulant properties. The rationale for its use in inflammation is mainly based on historical texts, folk remedies, and longstanding culinary-medical practices.
Some preliminary in vitro and animal studies in recent decades have identified compounds in galangal (such as galangin and other flavonoids) that demonstrate anti-inflammatory activity, mainly by inhibiting pro-inflammatory enzymes or signaling pathways. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence remains limited to preclinical studies and traditional use. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for further investigation, current support relies primarily on tradition, and the evidence level is modest.
In summary, the use of galangal for inflammation is primarily justified by traditional practices, with some emerging but not yet conclusive scientific research.
