Arctiin is a lignan compound found primarily in the seeds of Arctium lappa (burdock). Recent scientific studies suggest that arctiin possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which have prompted research into its potential use for inflammatory conditions, including Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Preclinical studies, mainly in animal models, have shown that arctiin can attenuate colonic inflammation by modulating inflammatory cytokine production, reducing oxidative stress, and inhibiting pathways such as NF-κB that are central to inflammatory responses. For example, a 2015 study in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis demonstrated that arctiin treatment reduced disease activity and histological damage in the colon, correlating with decreased levels of pro-inflammatory mediators. However, there are currently no robust clinical trials in humans evaluating the efficacy or safety of arctiin for IBD. While these preclinical findings are promising and provide a scientific rationale for further investigation, the absence of human data limits the strength of the evidence supporting arctiin’s use for IBD. Thus, while the use is scientifically justified at a preliminary, experimental level, its evidence base is currently weak (rated 2 out of 5), and arctiin should not yet be considered a validated therapy for IBD in clinical practice.
