Astragalin, a natural flavonoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants such as Polygonum aviculare and Astragalus membranaceus, has been investigated for its potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Recent preclinical studies suggest that astragalin may have beneficial effects in models of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Specifically, animal studies have demonstrated that astragalin can reduce inflammation in chemically induced colitis models, decrease levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), and inhibit pathways like NF-κB that are known to play a central role in intestinal inflammation. These effects are believed to stem from astragalin's capacity to modulate oxidative stress and immune responses in the gut.
However, to date, the evidence supporting astragalin’s use for IBD is limited to in vitro experiments and animal models. There are no published clinical trials or high-quality human studies that validate its efficacy or safety for patients with IBD. Therefore, while the scientific rationale for astragalin’s use in IBD is supported by preliminary mechanistic and animal data, it remains unproven in humans, and its clinical relevance is uncertain. More research, particularly well-designed human studies, is needed before astragalin can be recommended as a treatment option for IBD.
