Bacillus (mixed species) are spore-forming probiotic bacteria that have been studied for their potential benefits in gastrointestinal health, including Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. While there is a long history of probiotic use for gut health, the use of Bacillus species specifically for IBD is based primarily on emerging scientific research rather than traditional use.
Several small clinical trials and preclinical studies suggest possible benefits. Bacillus coagulans has shown some promise in randomized, placebo-controlled trials for improving symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but data in IBD are limited. Some animal studies and pilot human trials report reduced inflammation and improved gut barrier function with Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus coagulans supplementation. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the immune response, competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, and enhancement of mucosal barrier integrity.
However, compared to better-studied probiotics like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, the evidence base for Bacillus (especially as mixed species) in IBD remains limited and of low quality. Most studies are small, short-term, and sometimes industry-funded. Systematic reviews conclude that while Bacillus-based probiotics appear safe, robust evidence supporting their efficacy in IBD is lacking and more large, well-designed clinical trials are needed. Therefore, current use is justified by preliminary scientific research rather than tradition, with overall evidence rated as weak to moderate (2/5).
