Bifidobacterium animalis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential to support or treat Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The scientific justification for its use is based on its general effects on gut microbiota composition and immune modulation. Several clinical trials and animal studies have examined the effects of B. animalis (often as the subspecies B. animalis subsp. lactis) on IBD symptoms and inflammation markers. Some small-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses suggest that B. animalis-containing probiotics may improve certain symptoms, such as stool frequency and quality of life, and reduce biomarkers of inflammation. However, results are inconsistent, and most studies use multi-strain probiotic formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to B. animalis. Furthermore, evidence supporting its ability to induce or maintain remission in IBD is limited and generally considered weak.
