Scientific interest arises from the genus's ability to modulate gut microbiota, enhance mucosal barrier function, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. Several clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that certain strains of Bifidobacterium, often in combination with other probiotics (such as in multi-strain formulas like VSL#3), may help maintain remission and reduce symptoms in ulcerative colitis patients. For example, a 2010 Cochrane review found some evidence for the efficacy of probiotics (including Bifidobacterium-containing products) in maintaining remission in ulcerative colitis, but results were not consistent across all studies.

However, the evidence is weaker for Crohn’s disease, and results can vary substantially depending on the specific strain and formulation used. Furthermore, most studies focus on specific strains (e.g., Bifidobacterium longum or Bifidobacterium breve) rather than unspecified Bifidobacterium, and there is insufficient evidence to generalize findings to all members of the genus.
