Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The rationale is based on the observation that the gut microbiota of IBD patients is often depleted in beneficial bacteria, including various Bifidobacterium species. Several clinical studies and systematic reviews have evaluated the efficacy of Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics, often in combination with other probiotic strains, for IBD management. Some randomized controlled trials have shown that mixed Bifidobacterium probiotics can help induce or maintain remission in ulcerative colitis, reduce disease activity, and improve mucosal healing, though results are often modest and more pronounced in ulcerative colitis than Crohn’s disease. The evidence is stronger for multi-strain preparations (e.g., VSL#3, which contains Bifidobacterium species among others) than for single-strain products. Mechanistically, Bifidobacterium species are thought to exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating immune responses, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and outcompeting pathogenic bacteria. However, not all studies are positive, and heterogeneity in study design, probiotic composition, and patient populations makes interpretation challenging. Major clinical guidelines acknowledge probiotics as adjuncts but not primary therapy in IBD. Overall, the use of Bifidobacterium (mixed) for IBD is scientifically supported, but the evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), with benefits likely to be strain-dependent and more consistently seen in ulcerative colitis.
