Flavans are a subclass of flavonoids found in various plant foods, including tea, cocoa, and certain fruits. There is emerging scientific interest in the potential of flavans to modulate inflammatory processes in the gut, which are central to Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Preclinical studies, particularly in animal models, have shown that flavans can exert anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, reducing oxidative stress, and potentially modulating gut microbiota composition. These mechanisms are relevant to the pathogenesis of IBD. Some in vitro studies have also demonstrated that flavans can inhibit pathways like NF-κB, which is pivotal in mediating intestinal inflammation. However, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most human data focus on dietary patterns rich in flavonoids in general rather than isolated flavans, and there are few, if any, large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically investigating flavans as a treatment for IBD. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and supportive preclinical evidence, the overall strength of human clinical evidence remains modest. Flavans are not currently part of standard medical therapy for IBD, but ongoing research may clarify their role in adjunctive nutrition or as preventive agents.
