Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotic fibers that are increasingly studied for their potential role in managing Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The rationale for their use is rooted in their ability to modulate the gut microbiota, encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which are often depleted in IBD patients.
Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have investigated GOS supplementation in IBD. Some studies report that GOS can improve gut barrier function, reduce intestinal inflammation, and increase the production of short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which have anti-inflammatory properties. For example, a pilot study in ulcerative colitis patients suggested that GOS supplementation was associated with increased Bifidobacteria and some improvement in symptoms. However, these studies are generally limited in size and duration, and results are often inconsistent.
Systematic reviews conclude that while GOS and other prebiotics show promise, the evidence is not yet robust enough to recommend routine use for all IBD patients. More large-scale, well-controlled trials are needed to confirm clinical efficacy. Therefore, the use of GOS for IBD is supported by emerging but still preliminary scientific evidence, rather than by historical or traditional use.
