Legume proteins, such as those derived from soy, pea, and other pulses, have been investigated for their potential benefits in managing Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The scientific rationale is based on several properties of legume proteins and their derived peptides, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects. Preclinical studies, particularly in animal models of colitis, have demonstrated that legume protein hydrolysates can reduce inflammatory markers, improve intestinal barrier function, and modulate gut microbiota composition in ways that may be beneficial for IBD. For example, studies in mice have shown that soy protein hydrolysates can attenuate colonic inflammation by downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhancing mucosal healing.

However, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited. Some small pilot studies and dietary intervention trials have suggested that diets higher in plant protein (including legumes) may be associated with improved gut health and lower disease activity in IBD patients, but these findings are not yet robust or widely replicated. Additionally, some individuals with IBD may have personal intolerances to certain legumes, which could limit their use. Overall, legume protein as a supportive dietary component for IBD is scientifically plausible and supported by preclinical evidence, but larger, well-controlled human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish clinical guidelines.
