Phlorotannins are a class of polyphenolic compounds found exclusively in brown seaweeds. Their use for the support or treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is primarily based on emerging scientific research rather than traditional use. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that phlorotannins exhibit strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In animal models of colitis, phlorotannins have been shown to reduce inflammation, decrease the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), and improve histopathological features of the colon. These effects are believed to be mediated through inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway and reduction of oxidative stress in intestinal tissues.
Despite these promising results in cell cultures and animal studies, there is currently a lack of robust clinical trials in humans investigating the efficacy of phlorotannins for IBD. Thus, while preclinical evidence supports their potential benefit, the evidence base is not yet strong enough to recommend their use as a therapeutic agent for IBD in humans. Further research, especially well-designed human clinical trials, is needed to confirm safety, efficacy, and appropriate dosage. Presently, phlorotannins are best considered as a compound of interest with potential rather than an established therapy for IBD.
