Phyllanthus fraternus, a species in the Phyllanthus genus, has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine in India and other parts of Asia for liver disorders, jaundice, and kidney ailments. Increasingly, it has also been investigated for its anti-inflammatory properties, which are of interest in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that extracts of Phyllanthus fraternus possess significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. For example, animal studies have shown that its extracts can reduce markers of inflammation in chemically induced models of colitis, likely through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and free radicals. These effects are attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds such as lignans, flavonoids, and tannins. However, while these preclinical results are promising, clinical evidence in humans is lacking. There are no published randomized controlled trials or well-designed clinical studies evaluating the efficacy or safety of Phyllanthus fraternus specifically in patients with IBD. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some laboratory validation for its use in inflammatory conditions, the evidence for its use in IBD is currently limited to animal models and in vitro studies. More rigorous human studies are needed before it can be recommended for treating IBD.
