Polyphenols (mixed), a diverse group of naturally occurring compounds found in plants (such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and lignans), are increasingly studied for their potential role in managing Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have demonstrated that polyphenols can exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. They appear to modulate inflammatory signaling pathways (e.g., NF-κB), downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines, and reduce oxidative stress, all of which are implicated in the pathogenesis of IBD. Some small-scale clinical trials have begun to explore polyphenol-rich foods or extracts (such as green tea, curcumin, resveratrol, and cocoa flavonoids) in IBD patients, with some reporting improvements in clinical symptoms, disease activity scores, and markers of inflammation. However, these studies often have limitations such as small sample sizes, short durations, use of mixed polyphenol sources, and variability in polyphenol bioavailability. Systematic reviews (e.g., by the journal Nutrients, 2019; Frontiers in Nutrition, 2021) conclude that while preclinical evidence is strong, clinical evidence remains preliminary and further robust, large-scale trials are required. Thus, the use of mixed polyphenols to support IBD is grounded in scientific investigation, but current clinical evidence is moderate and not definitive. Polyphenols are not considered standard therapy but may serve as adjuncts under medical supervision.
