Rosmarinic acid, a polyphenolic compound found in herbs like rosemary, basil, and perilla, has been investigated for its potential benefit in Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Preclinical studies (mostly animal models and in vitro) have shown that rosmarinic acid exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. For instance, several rodent studies have demonstrated that administration of rosmarinic acid reduces colonic inflammation, decreases pro-inflammatory cytokine production (such as TNF-α and IL-1β), and improves histological scores of colitis. These effects are thought to be mediated by inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathways and reduction of oxidative stress.

However, clinical evidence in humans is very limited. There are currently no large-scale randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of rosmarinic acid for patients with IBD. Some small pilot studies and case reports suggest potential symptomatic benefit, but these are insufficient to draw firm conclusions. Most of the current justification for its use is based on extrapolation from animal and cell culture data, rather than direct human evidence.

In summary, while the mechanistic rationale and animal studies are promising, the lack of robust clinical trials in humans limits the strength of the evidence. The use of rosmarinic acid for IBD is supported by preliminary scientific findings, but more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in humans.
