Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Acacia, specifically Acacia senegal (source of gum arabic), has a long history of use in traditional medicine for various ailments, including sore throat and cough, which are symptoms associated with influenza. Traditional systems, such as those in Africa and the Middle East, have used acacia preparations as demulcents to soothe mucous membranes and alleviate irritation in the throat and respiratory tract. However, there is very limited direct historical evidence for its use specifically to treat or prevent influenza as a viral illness. The primary justification for acacia’s use in influenza is its traditional use as a remedy for respiratory symptoms rather than for its antiviral properties.

Scientific research on acacia focuses mostly on its prebiotic and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as its use as a food additive. There is no robust clinical or preclinical evidence supporting its efficacy against influenza viruses or as a treatment for influenza infection. The evidence for its use in this context is therefore rated as very weak (1/5) and is based almost entirely on traditional practices rather than validated scientific data.
