Evidence supporting the use of: Agastache
For the health condition: Influenza
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Agastache, particularly Agastache rugosa (Korean Mint), is traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine for ailments such as colds, fever, and digestive issues. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is known as "Huo Xiang" and is a key component of the formula Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San, commonly prescribed for symptoms like chills, fever, headache, nausea, and influenza-like illnesses. The rationale in TCM is that Agastache helps to "expel dampness" and harmonize the stomach, which are thought to contribute to the body's ability to resist external pathogens, including those causing influenza.
However, while there are some in vitro studies suggesting mild antiviral activity of Agastache extracts (including activity against some viruses), robust scientific validation specific to influenza is lacking. Clinical trials in humans are absent, and the majority of the evidence for its use in influenza comes from centuries of traditional use in Asia. The rating of 2 reflects that while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific support is limited and mostly preclinical. Therefore, its use for influenza is justified primarily by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence.
