Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Liverleaf (Hepatica americana), also known as liverwort, has a history of use in North American and European folk medicine, particularly among indigenous peoples and early settlers. Its use for respiratory ailments, including influenza and coughs, was primarily based on the “Doctrine of Signatures”—the belief that plants resembling certain organs could be used to treat ailments of those organs. The leaves of Hepatica were thought to resemble the human liver, hence its name and its association with treating liver and, by extension, systemic illnesses. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in treating or supporting recovery from influenza. Historical herbal texts and ethnobotanical records sometimes mention its use for coughs, colds, and related symptoms, but these references are anecdotal and not based on controlled studies. Modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies validating these uses are essentially nonexistent. Thus, while its use for influenza is rooted in tradition, the evidence is weak and largely unsupported by modern science.
