Evidence supporting the use of: Apple cider vinegar
For the health condition: Influenza
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has a long history of use in folk medicine, including as a home remedy for symptoms of influenza (flu) such as sore throat and congestion. Traditionally, ACV has been used in warm drinks, gargles, or as part of home remedies intended to "detoxify" the body or boost immunity. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for influenza is almost entirely anecdotal. There are no robust clinical trials or scientific studies demonstrating that ACV can prevent, treat, or shorten the duration of influenza infection. Some research has shown mild antibacterial properties of vinegar in laboratory settings, but there is no evidence that these effects translate to antiviral activity against the influenza virus in humans. The acidic nature of ACV may temporarily soothe a sore throat, but this is not unique to ACV and does not address the virus itself. In summary, the use of ACV for influenza is primarily supported by tradition rather than validated by scientific evidence.
