Evidence supporting the use of: Astragaloside
For the health condition: Influenza
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Astragaloside, particularly astragaloside IV, is a bioactive saponin compound derived from the root of Astragalus membranaceus, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Astragalus has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to "strengthen the body's resistance," often in the context of preventing or treating respiratory infections, including influenza and the common cold. The use of Astragalus and its constituents like astragaloside for influenza is therefore primarily justified by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
There are some preclinical studies suggesting that astragaloside IV may have immunomodulatory and antiviral effects, including enhancement of macrophage activity and upregulation of certain cytokines. In vitro and animal studies have shown some inhibitory activity against influenza viruses and improvement in immune response. However, high-quality human clinical trials specifically investigating astragaloside IV for the prevention or treatment of influenza are lacking. Most studies focus on the whole herb or crude extracts, not the isolated astragaloside IV compound.
In summary, astragaloside's use for influenza is supported mainly by traditional use, with only limited, low-quality scientific evidence from laboratory and animal research. There is insufficient clinical evidence to recommend astragaloside IV as an effective treatment or preventive agent for influenza in humans.
