For the health condition: Influenza
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Basidiomycota is a large phylum of fungi that includes many medicinal mushrooms such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), and Grifola frondosa (Maitake). These mushrooms have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia, for supporting immune health and treating respiratory infections. However, recent scientific studies have begun to examine their effects more rigorously, specifically regarding influenza. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that polysaccharides and other bioactive compounds from Basidiomycota mushrooms can modulate the immune system, enhance the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, and exhibit antiviral properties. For example, β-glucans from Shiitake and Reishi mushrooms have demonstrated the ability to stimulate immune responses that could be beneficial against viral infections, including influenza. Some studies have also shown direct inhibition of influenza virus replication in cell culture systems. Despite these promising findings, clinical evidence in humans remains limited. There are a handful of small-scale trials and case reports suggesting potential benefits, such as reduced duration or severity of symptoms, but these are not sufficient for strong clinical recommendations. Most of the evidence is preclinical or anecdotal. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for investigating Basidiomycota as supportive agents against influenza, the current level of evidence is modest and further well-designed clinical trials are needed to validate efficacy and safety.
