Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacteria, a genus of probiotic bacteria, has been investigated for its immunomodulatory properties, which might be beneficial in the context of respiratory viral infections like influenza. Some preclinical studies in animal models have suggested that oral administration of certain Bifidobacteria strains can enhance mucosal immunity and may reduce the severity or duration of influenza infection. For example, Bifidobacterium longum has been shown in mice to modulate immune responses and lower viral titers in the respiratory tract. Additionally, several in vitro studies demonstrate that Bifidobacteria can stimulate the production of antiviral cytokines such as interferons.

However, direct evidence in humans is limited. Few clinical trials have looked specifically at Bifidobacteria supplementation for prevention or treatment of influenza. Some human studies on probiotics in general (including Bifidobacteria) suggest a slight reduction in the incidence or duration of acute respiratory infections, but these studies often include mixed bacterial strains and are not influenza-specific. Major health organizations do not currently recommend Bifidobacteria as a primary intervention for influenza.

In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and limited preclinical evidence to support the use of Bifidobacteria for influenza, robust clinical validation is lacking. The evidence is preliminary, and further well-designed human trials are needed to confirm any significant benefit.
