Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Brandy has traditionally been used as a home remedy to support treatment of influenza, primarily due to its warming effect and its role as a folk medicine ingredient. Historical sources from the 19th and early 20th centuries often recommended brandy, along with other spirits, for flu and other respiratory illnesses, based on the belief that it could "stimulate" the body, provide comfort, and help patients rest. However, these recommendations were based on anecdotal evidence and predate modern scientific understanding of viral infections.

There is no scientific evidence that brandy or any other alcoholic beverage has antiviral properties against the influenza virus or that it improves outcomes in influenza infection. Alcohol can provide a temporary sensation of warmth and mild relaxation due to its vasodilatory and sedative effects, but it does not treat the underlying viral infection. In fact, alcohol can impair immune function and potentially worsen dehydration, which may be detrimental during illness.

Therefore, the use of brandy for influenza is rooted in tradition rather than science, and current medical guidelines do not recommend alcohol for the treatment or support of influenza.
