Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Sumac (Rhus chinensis), also known as Galla Chinensis or Chinese gall, has a longstanding use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating various ailments, including symptoms associated with influenza such as fever, cough, and sore throat. Its inclusion in TCM prescriptions is primarily based on its perceived "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, according to historical texts. The medicinal galls of Rhus chinensis are rich in tannins, which have been attributed antimicrobial and antiviral activities in vitro. However, there is limited direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically against influenza virus infection in humans. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated inhibitory effects on viral replication by extracts or isolated compounds from Rhus chinensis, but these findings are preliminary and largely limited to cell culture or animal models. No high-quality randomized controlled trials have been published to validate its effectiveness or safety for influenza in clinical settings. Thus, while the use of Chinese Sumac for influenza is well documented in traditional medical practice, scientific validation remains limited and inconclusive.
