Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Clerodendrum trichotomum, also known as Harlequin Glorybower, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. In Chinese and Japanese ethnomedicine, the leaves, roots, and stems of C. trichotomum have been employed to treat fever, cough, sore throat, and other symptoms that overlap with influenza-like illness. However, the application is based on its perceived antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties rather than direct evidence of antiviral activity against influenza viruses. Scientific studies on Clerodendrum trichotomum focus mainly on its general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and while some in vitro research suggests certain extracts may inhibit viral replication, there is insufficient direct evidence regarding its efficacy against the influenza virus in humans or animal models. Thus, while C. trichotomum has traditional use for symptom relief in flu-like illnesses, high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies specifically targeting influenza are lacking. As a result, its use for influenza is justified primarily by tradition, with a modest evidence rating due to the absence of direct scientific validation.
